If the federal government can force someone to purchase health insurance based solely on citizenship and on being alive, then why can’t state lawmakers force their citizens to purchase a firearm?

Well, that’s the reasoning behind a new bill being introduced in South Dakota. ArgusLeader.com reports:

Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”

The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.

Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.”

The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.”

Rep. Hal Wick, R-Sioux Falls, is sponsoring the bill and knows it will be killed. But he said he is introducing it to prove a point that the federal health care reform mandate passed last year is unconstitutional.

“Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not. But at the same time, we do not believe the federal government can order every citizen to buy health insurance,” he said.

Although these lawmakers are only proposing this bill to make a point about health care, they do have a case to be made. As I stated above, if the government can force us to buy a product or service, such as a health insurance policy, what is to stop politicians from forcing us to buy a gun?

Also, I have noticed other blogs worry about the strategy of bringing guns and the 2nd Amendment into the Obamacare discussion, but I don’t think the panic is necessary. Is it possible these lawmakers are bringing up the “guns-for-everybody” argument, because it is something that scares liberals just as much as socialized health care scares conservatives?

Anyways, the technical side of the argument can be found here.

Wonder what you would find if you frisked the latest news from Obama and the White House?

Answer: The new Obama-Care bill has been released! …And apparently overhauling the health-care system is not enough, because it also takes over the student loan industry.

DANG! Now that is a big bill!

Or you can read it here.

Gateway Pundit did a great job pointing out some of the outrageous ‘goodies’ found deep within this mountain of paper disguised as a deficit-neutral health-care bill:

There are three sections talking about student loans.
Pg 916 line 17
Pg 1,949 line 4

Student aid portion of bill begins on page 2,098.
Pg 2,192 line 1 and continues for many pages.

Page 50/section 152: The bill will provide insurance to all non-U.S. residents, even if they are here illegally.

Page 58 and 59: The government will have real-time access to an individual’s bank account and will have the authority to make electronic fund transfers from those accounts.

Page 65/section 164: The plan will be subsidized (by the government) for all union members, union retirees and for community organizations (such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now – ACORN).

So far, the bill sounds like a total disaster waiting to happen, but perhaps there is some light at the end of the tunnel. According to the New York Post:

The top House Republican says the GOP can defeat the Democratic health care bill that may reach the House floor this coming week.

Ohio Rep. John Boehner says Republicans alone can’t stop the legislation. But he says Republicans are “going to do everything we can to make it difficult for them, if not impossible, to pass the bill.”

I really hope he is right!

The sad part about all of this is that a lot more government expansions and nonsense will be discovered within this 2,309 page bill in the upcoming days. Until then, the Democrats really need to take a step back, look at the country they serve, and realize how pissed off America actually is. The newly elected U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) describes this mess quite easily:

Maybe you remember what President Obama promised in his State of the Union address. He said he was going to finally focus on jobs and the economy for the remainder of this year. I applauded him for that. Well, here it is, it’s almost spring. And what is he out there talking about again? That same 2,700-page, multi-trillion dollar healthcare legislation.

So, an entire year has gone to waste. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, and many more jobs are in danger. Even now, the president still hasn’t gotten the message.

Somehow, the greater the public opposition to the healthcare bill, the more determined they seem to force it on us anyway. Their attitude shows Washington at its very worst – the presumption that they know best, and they’re going to get their way whether the American people like it or not.

Props to Sen. Brown (R-MA)!
